After successfully resettling our first family to the Hudson Valley in just 3 months, New Paltz for Refugees has sponsored a second family!
This second family had a terrifying journey from Afghanistan, and after a very circuitous route arrived in Buffalo, NY. They have little support there and have decided to relocate to our welcoming community. The family includes an English speaking father who works IT, a non-English speaking mom and three children, 9 years and younger.

Volunteer Support
Since November, New Paltz for Refugees has created a strong and dedicated group of Team Leads who are available to assist, mentor and support a second, new set of Team Leads. A robust group of caring neighbors is essential to successful sponsorship. We're actively recruiting another set of Team Leads for our next family, as well as seeking support volunteers for each of the following categories:
Social Services: We currently have a highly experienced Social Services volunteer who will continue to be the Team Lead for the second family, but can use help with transportation to Social Services offices in Kingston. Folks familiar with the field are best suited for this volunteer job.
Education/Enrichment Lead: Help register kids in school, find and schedule supplemental tutoring support in home and/or with community and college based programs (we have contacts and experience to share). Do you have expertise to share in the arts or in education? Let us know! Help find local resources willing to sponsor family members for theater and other fun community events.
Transportation Support: Do you a couple of hours a week you can spare for recurring appointments? Or perhaps you can pitch in as needed when transportation is required? The family will have various transportation needs: events, doctor’s appointments, weekly visits to the food pantry, etc. Can you add your name to a transportation list and offer a ride when needed?
Grant Writing: We'll continue to use our current and highly experienced Team Lead in this area but identifying grants is super helpful.
In kind Donations Volunteers: We've learned it's best to request targeted donations. You'll work closely with the Team Lead to identify what's needed and coordinate the call for in-kind donations through various social and community networks.
Social Media: Is this your jam? Getting positive coverage in various social media outlets leads to more donations as well as educating our community regarding emergent and chronic concerns for the Afghan people.
Housing: We may need to secure housing for this next family… or not. Stay tuned!
Donor Relations: Tracking donor amounts, emails and thank you cards.
